Homewood Planning and Zoning Commission declines to recommend Calumet Country Club rezoning

After 20 hours of presentations and questions spread over five meetings, the Homewood Planning and Zoning Commission came to a decision Thursday night on a request to rezone the former Calumet Country Club to enable an industrial development.

The commission unanimously voted against recommending the rezoning request and the special use permit required for the project to proceed. The request will move to the board of trustees for a final decision.

After a lengthy and contentious public hearing that took up the majority of the time in previous meetings, the commission members took another two hours to seek clarification on details of the developer’s plan.

In their comments prior to voting, commissioners said were not satisfied that the planners had done all they could to mitigate the possible impact on nearby residential areas and had shown little interest in learning about the community while developing their plans.
