Prairie State pitched well in both games of the doubleheader Sunday, March 7, but fell short in both games against Roosevelt University in Peoria.

The Pioneers dropped the first game 4-3 and lost 4-2 in the second game on Sunday.

Roosevelt University 4, Prairie State 3
The Pioneers took a lead into the sixth inning, but Roosevelt cracked a two-run homer to take the lead for good.

Isaiah Gaines took the tough-luck loss on the mound, striking out 10 hitters while giving up only two earned runs on the sixth-inning homer.

The Pioneers went up two run in the second inning when Scott Gates crushed a 2-run homer plating Gabe Cortez. Gates drove in the team's third run in the fifth inning and had three hits in the game. Cortez had two hits for the Pioneers (0-4).

Roosevelt University (Peoria) 3, Prairie State 2
As good as Gates was with the bat in game one, he was just as good on the mound in game two.

He surrendered two earned runs while striking out 11 hitters.

Cortez continued his excellent weekend at the plate going 3 for 3 with three doubles.

Cortez scored both runs for the Pioneers, one in the fourth and the other in the sixth which tied the game. Isaac Rivera singled in the tying run for Prairie State before Roosevelt scored the winning run in the bottom half of the inning.

Prairie State will open up its home schedule next Friday, March 12, against Sauk Valley Community College.
