Homewood trustees voted unanimously Tuesday against four ordinances that would have changed the acceptable land use of Calumet Country Club from open lands to limited manufacturing, prerequisites to the development of a proposed trucking fulfillment center.
Trustees cited the work of the Homewood Planning and Zoning Commission in the 5-0 vote. Trustee Larry Burnson was absent.
The commission last week declined to recommend the changes, arguing the developer failed to show that the proposal would not harm the village. In comments prior to the vote, trustees said they agreed the proposed use of the property did not comply with the village’s rezoning standards.
They also thanked residents for their challenging questions and comments on the matter.
The meeting was preceded by a rally sponsored by South Suburbs for Greenspace Over Concrete, a group of residents that organized a few weeks ago to oppose the redevelopment project.
The group conducted a number of demonstrations at village hall recently, in addition to participating in the Planning and Zoning public hearing process. The commission continued its meeting three times to accommodate all commenters, and it conducted a final meeting to review the plan and vote on whether it met zoning standards.
Residents also spoke at Tuesday’s meeting, some to reiterate their opposition to the project and some to thank the board for its decision.
