Park district plans to open Lions Club Pool on June 5

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District is getting ready to open the Lions Club Pool swim season on June 5. Passes go on sale April 1.

The pool remained closed in 2020 when staff decided COVID-19 safety guidelines were difficult to meet. This year, staff is more optimistic about people wanting to be outside enjoying the pool.

Staff is working to provide the safest environment for swimmers of all ages. To meet safety guidelines and limits on people gathering, swimming will be open in two-hour blocks of time. Swimmers will be asked to sign up for designated slots. This will help staff manage crowd size to make certain the park district is meeting the 50% capacity limits.

After the two hours, staff will use a 30-minute break time for cleaning protocols, said Stephanie Simpson, superintendent of recreation. Guests will leave the pool area during this time.

“We will have hand sanitizer stations throughout the facility and the locker rooms, and chairs and tables and the concession area will be sanitized in between each block of open swim times. Masks will be required when not in the water,” Simpson said. Chairs on the pool deck will be spaced for social distancing.

Simpson said initially the pool slide won’t be open. Fitness classes and swim lessons will be offered, and the park district will make time for pool party rentals. The concession station will be open.

The park district commissioners agreed to a flat per-person fee for pool passes. The $50 rate for residents and $75 for nonresidents entitles the holder to priority registration for swim times. Persons also can walk up, pay a $6 fee for residents and $9 for non-residents and swim during a two-hour block, if the pool crowd limitations haven’t been met.

Simpson said details on the season and how to purchase passes are posted on the H-F Park District website hfparks.com.

The park district is also accepting applications for lifeguards and summer staff. Contact staff at 708-957-0300.
