Homewood approves street repair, other contracts at start of fiscal year

Several contracts for road work and materials were approved with a series of contracts at the Homewood village board meeting Tuesday.

A cooperative bid for concrete work in Alsip, Homewood, Orland Park, Richton Park and South Holland was awarded to Whiteline Construction of Chicago. Cooperative bids usually result in lower costs for individual towns.

Richton Park was the lead municipality on the bid. The work includes sidewalk replacement, curb replacement, road patching and restoration. Whiteline was the lowest of five bidders at $447,609.50, of which Homewood will pay $126,000.

Coal City firm D Construction was the lowest of three quotes for asphalt, including surface mix, binder mix and cold patch. The village budgeted $35,000 for asphalt and will pay a per-ton rate for each.

Brites Cartage, of Chicago Heights, was the lowest of three bidders for crushed limestone. It quoted the village $11.60 per ton of CA6 grade stone, $17.10 for one-inch and $16.10 for two-inch. $44,750 was budgeted.

A contract for street sweeping was extended with Illinois Central Sweeping Services of Tinley Park for $55,070.92. Residential sweeps are done five times per year and commercial sweeps 15 times annually.

Pavement marking was cut from the last annual budget to mitigate pandemic-related economic effects. It was brought back in the next budget, which was also approved Tuesday. The village renewed a past contract with the Traffic Control Company of South Holland for $100,000.

In other business, the first phase of a needed electrical upgrade to the Homewood Science Center will be done by Meany Electrical of Hazel Crest for $28,000. The company was recommended by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, who will donate labor through its apprenticeship program. Without it, the original quote for the project was $190,090.

Governors State University’s “The Knowledge Exchange” will donate  $3,000 for light fixtures in the Science Center’s Michael Wexler Theater.  The village is soliciting other donations for the project, as well.

A contract with Aramark Uniform Services was renewed for uniform and floor mat rentals for public works for no more than $35,870.

Bravo Services will clean four village buildings three times per week and the Homewood Science Center twice a month. A $24,600 contract was passed.

Tree work contracts were awarded to Homer Tree Care of Lockport and Winkler’s Tree Service of LaGrange Park. The contracts will include work for Homewood, Richton Park and Orland Park. Four other firms declined to bid. Homer Tree Care will remove trees and stumps while Winkler’s will do seasonal trimming, spot trimming and emergency removal.

Scavenger licenses were renewed for Homewood Disposal, Allied Waste Transportation and Waste Management. Limited scavenger licenses for roll-off dumpsters only were renewed for Midway Building Supply, Tri-State Disposal and Total Disposal.
