Flossmoor chief: Vehicle theft suspect likely left area after late-night search

One suspect remains at large after fleeing from an automobile he allegedly stole with an accomplice and then ditched in Flossmoor, said Police Chief Tod Kamleiter.

Sometime before 11 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, two people stole a vehicle in Matteson, according to a late-night press release from the Village of Flossmoor.

Kamleiter said Country Club Hills police tried to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the suspects sped away. A police chase ensued, leading into Flossmoor.

At about 11 p.m., near the intersection of Flossmoor Road and Western Avenue, the suspects left the vehicle and fled on foot. A search was initiated, involving a law enforcement helicopter.

Flossmoor police maintained a perimeter, Kamleiter said, while officers from Country Club Hills searched for the suspects. One was found in the immediate area, Kamleiter said.

Though the other suspect remains at large, Kamleiter said there is no danger to the community.

“Not at all,” he said. “In my career, I’ve seen that when kids steal a car like this and flee, the last thing they want to do is call attention to themselves. They’re definitely going to leave the area.”
