Two at H-F High named National Merit semifinalists

Homewood-Flossmoor High School seniors David Gibek and Carter Langston have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

They were selected based on their scores on the 2020 PSAT/NMSQT exam taken as juniors. As part of the national pool of 16,000 qualifiers, they represent less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors. Their next step is to submit scholarship applications that will give information not only on their academic record, but their activities at school and in the community, their leadership abilities and honors and awards they’ve received.

David is in the International Baccalaureate Program at H-F. He intends to major in engineering in college but isn’t sure what field within engineering he’ll focus on. He said he’s always enjoyed math because he loves problem solving.

David, son of Dominik and Grazyna Gibek of Chicago Heights, is active in H-F’s public forum debate team, WHFH Radio, Mu Alpha Theta math honor society and the Spanish National Honor Society. He graduated from Serena Hills School.

Carter is in the International Baccalaureate certificate program at H-F. He intends to major in electrical and computer engineering.

Carter, the son of Winston Langston II and Leah Langston, is active in H-F’s Project Lead the Way pre-engineering program, is a percussionist with the H-F band, on the lacrosse team and is vice president of Key Club. He also serves on the state board of Operation Snowball and is one of the leaders of the program at H-F. He graduated from Heather Hill School.

H-F also has four students selected as Class of 2022 National Merit Commended students. Lucas Bouchie, William Goldberg, Samuel Starkenburg and Keisha Toguem are recognized for their exceptional academic promise. They were selected from the top 50,000 students who took the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
