Teens arrested for carjacking after Homewood police chase

Two teenagers were apprehended Tuesday morning after they allegedly hijacked a car in Homewood, police said in a press release.

Shortly after 10:20 a.m. on Feb. 8, Homewood police said a person was sitting as a passenger in a running car that was parked in a lot in the 17500 block of Dixie Highway, when a 16-year-old male got into the driver’s seat.

Police said he pointed a gun at the passenger and told them to leave the vehicle. The person complied and got out of the car, a white 2016 Nissan Altima.

The carjacker drove away, and Homewood officers saw the car fleeing the area, they said. With assistance from Illinois State Police officers, the car was stopped near interstates 88 and 294.

Police located two 16-year-old juveniles in the vehicle and took them into custody.

One juvenile was charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, possession of a stolen vehicle, and aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer.

The other juvenile was charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The alleged offenders are awaiting a bond hearing at Cook County juvenile detention center.
