Homewood, Flossmoor mayors condemn racist behavior of high school students

The mayors of Homewood and Flossmoor issued a joint statement Monday condemning the racist behavior of several high school students over the weekend.

National media attention has focused on the community after a video was widely distributed online Sunday showing four white Homewood-Flossmoor High School students in blackface making crude comments to a young black woman working at a fast food restaurant.

Tree plantings help school children celebrate Arbor Day

Friday's pleasant temperatures and beautiful blue sky made it the perfect day to mark Arbor Day, the annual celebration of trees. Students at Willow and James Hart Schools in Homewood and Parker Junior High in Flossmoor took to the outdoors to help public works crews plant new trees.


H-F baseball players bring positive message to young students

Willow students in teacher Mattie Walsh’s class were excited to have H-F Varsity Baseball Coach John McCarthy and players Jacob Schroeder, Tyler Schlaffer, Chad Readey, Xavier Frazier and John Pohrte sit with them for nearly 30 minutes reading stories that helped reinforce anti-bullying and kindness messages, while promoting the value of reading.

Flossmoor trustees swearing-in May 13, fourth seat declared open

The newly elected members of the Flossmoor Village Board will be sworn in during a 7:30 p.m. meeting on Monday, May 13, at village hall. Applications are being accepted for the one remaining open board seat.

Write-in candidate ready to join Homewood Library’s board

Nancy Gildart is joining the Homewood Public Library board of trustees after winning a two-year term as a write-in candidate. Gildart, who has lived in Homewood more than 27 years, said she put her name forward in 2017 as a resident interested in a vacant seat on the board, but wasn’t selected. This year she decided to try again to get on the board.
