Hart School at 18220 Morgan Ave., serves sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders.

“Scott is a wonderfully talented principal and we are fortunate that his leadership skills will continue to serve the district,” said board president Shelly Marks. “We are hopeful that we will fill his position with someone who brings strong leadership skills and unique talent to James Hart.”

Superintendent Dale Mitchell said the district will accept applications throughout the month. Candidates must hold a valid Illinois Professional Educator License with General Administrative or Principal Endorsement Illinois Designation as a Teacher Evaluator. Also, candidates must have a master’s degree and at least five years of successful experience in middle school and/or school administration.

Mitchell said the selection committee will include several parents, as well as current administrators and staff working with school board members.

The board is expected to name a new principal at its regular February meeting.

McAlister came to the principal’s position at Hart School after serving 11 years as assistant principal at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. He started his career at Munster Community High School where he worked for 10 years.

McAlister was named the next superintendent in April 2018. He will succeed Mitchell who retires in June 2021. During the 2020-2021 school year, McAlister will be assistant superintendent and be mentored by Mitchell.

Mitchell also served as a mentor to McAlister as he completed his superintendent’s endorsement in 2016 from Concordia College. For his coursework, McAlister completed a three credit-hour internship with Mitchell.

McAlister said the incredible support from the school board for the district’s administrative staff is also something that he and others consider extremely important in the management of District 153.
