Paywall FAQ

On Jan. 3, we launched a paywall designed to broaden the base of support from the community and provide the means to improve coverage.

The H-F Chronicle is an independent, locally owned publication that carries no debt and has no financial backing other than revenue generated by local advertisers and readers.

We need your help to keep local news flowing and improve our ability to deliver the information you need.

Frequently asked questions

How do I subscribe?
When you attempt to read a story, you should see a popup menu that provides subscription options. To subscribe, click on an option and on the subscribe button. LaterPay will guide you through the process to register and pay. There isn't a page you can go to just to subscribe.

Do I have to pay for every story?
Not necessarily. We use LaterPay as our paywall vendor, so it's possible to "buy" several stories without paying immediately. After reading $5 worth of stories, you'll be asked to register and pay. After that, you can read more stories until you reach the $5 threshold again. Individual stories are priced at 69 cents each. People who only read occasionally might want to use this option.

We can also occasionally make some public service stories available outside the paywall.

What do I get if I subscribe?
Subscribers who pay monthly ($8.99) or annually ($79) will be given full access to stories posted on hfchronicle.com

I have multiple devices. Can I read the Chronicle from any of them?
Yes. If you switch between desktop computer, pad or phone, you just need to login from each so LaterPay will recognize you.

I subscribed, but I still get the popup message asking me to pay.
Any time this happens, click on the I already bought this button. LaterPay should recognize your device, but if it's one you haven't used before, you will be asked to login.

I am trying to subscribe, but LaterPay will not accept my credit card.
To contact LaterPay directly for help with registration or login problems, visit LaterPay support or email [email protected]. We will be glad to help with problems, too. Write to [email protected] to report problems.

I am trying to login, but LaterPay does not recognize my email address.
To contact LaterPay directly for help with registration or login problems, visit LaterPay support or email [email protected]. We will be glad to help with problems, too. Write to [email protected] to report problems.

Can I pay by check?
Yes, for subscriptions, not individual stories. A monthly subscription is $8.99. An annual subscription is $79. Mail checks to H-F Chronicle, P.O. Box 461, Flossmoor, IL 60422. In the memo field or in a separate note, let us know you are subscribing and please include your email address. We will create an account for you on our website, which is a way to give you access to stories without going through the paywall.

I just recently made a donation to the Chronicle. Can I get access to stories?
Yes. We can set up an account for you at hfchronicle.com if you made a donation within the past six months. That basically provides a way around the paywall when you are logged in. Write to Eric Crump at [email protected] to request access and to report any login problems.

Where do I go to login?
Readers who have subscribed through LaterPay should remain logged in for two weeks at a time. When you need to log back in, you can go to

https://web.uselaterpay.com/
dialog/entry/#/login

Readers who have donated to the Chronicle prior to the launch of the paywall will have accounts directly on our website. The login is located on the front page at hfchronicle.com in the right sidebar under the Eco friendly website logo.

I forgot my LaterPay password. How can I get a new one?
Visit https://web.uselaterpay.com/dialog/entry/#/requestPasswordReset. Note that this works for LaterPay subscribers. If your account is on hfchronicle.com, you can reset your password at https://hfchronicle.com/user/password. Please note: LaterPay uses email addresses as the user ID. The Chronicle uses first and last name as the user ID.
