Reopening is requiring cautionary steps for businesses

Staying in business during a down economy is a challenge. As the state follows Restore Illinois guidelines, Homewood and Flossmoor businesses are taking steps to reopen, albeit on a limited basis. 

In early June, the Chronicle asked local business owners to reply to a brief survey about how their business has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and what customers should expect moving forward. We’ve compiled some of their answers.

Video gaming, property transactions on Homewood board agenda Tuesday

At their meeting Tuesday, Homewood trustees will consider two property transactions that will affect downtown development, and action that will reverse years of gaming policy.

Trustees will consider a change to municipal code to allow video gaming machines in bars and restaurants that have operated in the village for at least four years.

If approved, that measure would open up the gaming market in the village, a change that village officials have resisted for years.

Riding boom gives bike shop a bump

When the stay-at-home order came down from the governor’s office, Steve Buchtel, of GoodSpeed Cycles in Homewood, expected business to idle.

Instead, bike shops in Illinois were deemed essential businesses, a move Buchtel said made sense. Many people rely on bicycles for transportation, and GoodSpeed also serves customers who use wheelchairs.

LaBanque Hotel in Homewood to close temporarily because of COVID-19 pandemic

As the worldwide ripple effects of the coronavirus outbreak continue, the tourism and hospitality industries have been hit particularly hard, and on Friday, March 27, Homewood’s boutique hotel, La Banque,  closed its doors for “a week or two” according to Manager Meg Sakka.

The hotel joins a growing number of businesses hit by government-forced closures of schools, restaurants, bars and non-essential businesses.

Maple Tree owner: 'We are the phoenix'

Maple Tree Inn opened its new location at 18849 Dixie Highway in Homewood to the public on Feb. 7 and had a successful opening weekend, serving more than 800 diners, according to co-owner Katie Wennberg. But the ribbon cutting ceremony on Feb. 12 still proved to be an emotional occasion, putting an official seal on the restaurant's rebirth following a devastating fire at its Blue Island home in August 2018.
