The usual late summer doldrums were not all that languid in the Homewood-Flossmoor business scene, where a series of ribbon-cuttings, announcements and a couple of demolitions show a local economy with increasing energy.
There's more to come this week.
Homewood Village Manager Jim Marino confirmed Tuesday, Oct. 30, that Vice District Brewing at 18027 Dixie Highway was closed for failure to correct code violations.
Kids laughed with glee as District 153 teachers and administrators were dropped into a tank of chilly water during the Foundation 153 fun fest on Aug. 25. Nearby, staff from Lisa Grant Orthodontics, the sponsor of the dunk tank, were collecting money for the foundation.
The joy and giving of a fun activity like that might exemplify Grant's approach to her practice. Wearing braces and other orthodontic appliances might not always be comfortable, but Grant and her staff find ways to compensate.
Homewood trustees approved a motion Tuesday that will help pave the way for a new owner at Family Wine & Liquors at 18707 Dixie Highway. Current owners Butch and Tony Giralimo appeared before trustees to explain the reasons for the sale.
Bookie's New and Used Books held its ribbon-cutting and grand opening on Friday, Sept. 21, with village officials and store staff celebrating the opening of the company's second store. Bookie's also has a store in the Chicago's Beverly neighborhood.
Bibliophiles who have been waiting all summer for Bookie's New and Used Books to open won't have much longer to wait. Bookie's opens its doors at 2015 Ridge Road on Saturday.
