Cook County starts pilot project to improve transit accessibility in South Suburbs

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced Thursday, Oct. 15, that county officials are advancing plans to improve transit service and provide lower Metra fares for Chicago’s south side and south suburban Cook County residents.

Fair Transit South Cook, a three-year pilot project, aims to increase use of transit for these residents and essential workers by providing lower fares on Metra and new service options on Pace. 

Metra switching to alternate schedules on March 23 due to coronavirus

Metra announced on Thursday that commuter rail service will begin operating an alternate weekday schedule on Monday, March 23, to adjust for the reduced number of riders due to school closures, work-from-home mandates and other consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. It will operate its normal weekend schedules this weekend on lines that have weekend service.

Metra, Pace focus on cleaning vehicles to slow the spread of COVID-19

Mass transit agencies that serve Homewood and Flossmoor are working to prevent the spread of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, which was declared to be a pandemic on March 11.

The main response has been increased cleaning efforts on buses and trains and increased efforts to educate customers about effective hygiene.

In a statement this week, Pace bus service officials emphasized the focus on cleanliness.

Metra announces service interruption this weekend

Metra announced Monday that travel on the Electric Line will be affected this weekend by work on the 41st Street Bridge project that will require a seven-hour power shut down.

Several stations will be closed from 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, to 6 a.m. on  Sunday, Nov. 4, including Van Buren, Museum Campus, 18th Street, McCormick Place, 27th Street and 47th Street.  

No Metra fare increase in 2019

Metra announced on Wednesday, Sept. 12, that there will not be a fare increase in 2019. The commuter railroad will spend the year highlighting the need for more public aid and sounding the alarm about the system’s deterioration and possible downsizing if that aid does not materialize.

Metra construction to affect Electric Line schedule April 26-29

Metra's Electric Line schedule will be affected April 26-29 by a construction project. 

The schedule changes will allow workers to complete the installation and testing of a new signal and switching system just north of the Museum Campus/11th Street Station. The work could delay Metra Electric and South Shore trains up to 10 minutes from about 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 26 through Sunday, April 29.

Schedule changes coming to Metra Electric Line as part of Positive Train Control program

Metra will be changing the schedule on the Metra Electric Line during the evening rush period beginning April 23.

The electric line serves communities from Chicago to University Park, including Homewood and Flossmoor.

The changes are being made to provide increased train spacing in preparation for the implementation of the Positive Train Control (PTC) safety system.
