District 153 adds three specials to Churchill curriculum

For the coming year, Churchill School students will have three new specials added to the curriculum, but in shorter segments than the regular nine-week specials. District 153 has arranged its schedule to offer students in grades 1 through 8 the chance to learn new skills and broaden their knowledge through a set of “specials.” These are classes that, given in short time frames, enhance the regular academic curriculum.

Lisa Rost loves teaching so much, she spent four years examining her teaching methods at Homewood’s Willow School so she could become a better teacher.
 
Rost is the third District 153 teacher to earn a certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, in addition to Laura Kozel and Marisa Alborn from Churchill School. Teachers with the certificate have improved their teaching practices, helped students learn more and demonstrated a commitment to excellence, according to the national board.

Homewood District 153 says no thanks to guns in schools proposals

Student safety is important, but Homewood District 153 board members voted unanimously not to support measures to allow staff to carry firearms in schools.
 
Although no school district would be compelled to develop programs that allow firearms on campus, Homewood’s board members wanted to share their positions with delegates of the Illinois Association of School Boards. 
 

Homewood School Board sets budget hearing date, approves new hires

The Homewood School Board has set a date for a public hearing on District 153’s fiscal year 2019 budget.
 
The hearing will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 in the James Hart Media Center, 18220 Morgan St. The board is set to take action on the budget during its regular meeting scheduled immediately after the hearing.
 
Superintendent Dale Mitchell said he does not expect to hear much debate before the budget comes to a vote, as no big changes are proposed.

Distict 153 sees helping kids learn English essential to their success

Homewood District 153 is serving a melting pot of students, and not all of them come to school with an understanding of English. Or they speak English, but their parents don’t.
 
The numbers have been increasing. Children are enrolled whose heritage is from Nigeria, Lithuania, China, Mexico, Japan, the Philippines.
 

Remodeling at Churchill School first step on space needs

The Homewood District 153 school board agreed to plan for long-term needs in its three schools and gave the green light to a short-term remodeling job at Churchill School in the interim.
 
Classrooms surround an open space in Wing 3 of the Churchill building and accelerated math programs are now being conducted in that open space, said Superintendent Dale Mitchell.
