Student testing time for the state mandated PARCC test has been reduced from four weeks to just one week because Homewood District 153 is now able to give the test with paper and pencil.
 
Kathy Schaeflein, director of curriculum and instruction, said the district applied for a waiver so that the test no longer has to be administered by computer. 
 

Homewood schools set tax levy at $14.4 million

Homewood School District 153 approved its 2017 tax levy of $14.4 million at the Dec. 11 board of education meeting.
 
The district expects to collect an additional $400,000 over last year’s receipts.  It is holding the increase within the required tax cap limitations. The amount stays within the 2.1 percent Consumer Price Index limit and allows for some new property that will be on the tax rolls, said John Gibson, the chief school finance officer.

Homewood schools take long view with five-year plan

Homewood District 153 is preparing a path to the future through a new five-year strategic plan.
The process began this school year with more than 400 responses to a survey, answered primarily by parents. 
 
  • 85 percent believed children in the district are receiving a good education for their tax dollars
  • Mandated classes in math, English and science were considered most important. with fine arts and foreign language in second place

Home rule could help District 153 schools meet its budget shortfall

Homewood District 153 anticipates a $760,000 windfall to its budget if Homewood residents support the home rule initiative.
 
The village board is proposing to raise the sales tax by 0.25 percent and give the additional revenue to the other taxing bodies in Homewood — School Districts 153, 161 and 233, the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District and the Homewood Public Library.
 

Technology will help Hart students create and study music

Soon there will be a new way for students at James Hart School in Homewood to make music.
 
Over the summer, Emily Kasper, Matt Johnson and Adrienne Olsen, music faculty at Hart, designed a new curriculum that will have sixth, seventh and eighth graders using technology to explore and create music in the required six-week General Music classes. 
 
The curriculum also aligns with national and state standards for music, Olsen said.
 

Homewood District 153 budget will balance with referendum funds

The District 153 school board approved a balanced 2018 budget of $22.26 million because of an additional $640,000 raised in the 2016 referendum.
 
Revenues, expected at $21.62 million, cannot meet all the expenses despite the administration’s best attempts at holding the line on costs.  The board unanimously approved the budget at its Sept. 18 meeting.
