District 153 awards tenure to 8 teachers

The Homewood District 153 Board of Education awarded tenure to eight staff members at its Monday, April 11, board meeting.

Maureen Daley, Stephanie Hess, Kimberly Homich, Elizabeth Hovan, Meredith Leonard, Jessica Mucha, Amanda Speiser and Matthew Zimmerman were granted tenure.

To earn tenure, the teachers completed four years of successful employment with the district.

Changes helping with Round Two of PARCC testing

Administrators in Homewood District 153 are delighted with the longer testing window and shorter testing time for the 2016 PARCC tests.

In 2015, the first year of the test, all students were tested in the same few weeks. This year the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) moved from specified weeks for testing and told schools testing can take place between March 7 and June 10.

District 153 approves interactive learning system for Hart School

SmartLabs, a new approach for collaborative learning by middle school students, will be in place at the start of the 2016-17 school year at Hart School in Homewood.

The District 153 School Board agreed March 21 to spend $348,000 on the program designed for sixth, seventh and eighth graders.

“I’ve never been so excited by anything we decided to do,” said Board President Shelly Marks. “It offers a whole new level of engagement.”

District 153 volunteers continue efforts to win referendum support

As March 15 approaches, members of Citizens for Homewood Schools continue to share their message about the need for referendum approval.

District 153 needs voter approval to sell $9 million in bonds that will help cover the district’s expenses. The state has shorted the district more than $2 million in aid over the last five years and a drop in property values from the 2008 recession has reduced tax collections.

Homewood trustees laud James Hart basketball team

The James Hart Junior High School eighth-grade basketball team took third place in the state tournament with a victory Feb. 18 over Summit Hill Junior High. On Tuesday, the Panthers received kudos from the Homewood Board of Trustees, which approved a resolution honoring the team's accomplishment. Trustees also approved a contract to upgrade security features at village facilities.
