Homewood school board considering enrollment shifts, dissolving Millennium School

The Homewood District 153 school board is considering shifting fifth graders to Churchill School as a cost-cutting move. Parents were notified of the proposal Friday as administrators and school board members look at ways to save money in light of decreasing state support. Shifting students could save as much as $600,000 per year.

Hart Panthers take second place in state

Homewood’s James Hart Junior High baseball team captured second place in the state in the Illinois Elementary Education Association’s baseball championships this weekend.

The 18-member team won 11-9 Friday night to advance to the finals on Saturday. The team beat Pleasant Plains to advance to the finals against Coal City.

This is the first year Hart had a baseball team. The coaches are Matt Somodi and Grant Sikkema.

District 153 agrees to start baseball/softball program

Homewood loves its baseball. It’s had Homewood Babe Ruth League play for kids since 1951.

For those who can’t get enough, District 153 is hoping to establish a baseball and softball program for fall 2015 to compete in the Illinois Elementary School Association’s (IESA) play for the south and southwest area. The school board Monday approved filing an application with IESA.

This will be a mixed team of boys and girls at the junior high level.
