H-F High's DEI coordinator Catherine Ross Cook says all input is welcome

“The heart of equity work is that we’re all at the table together doing this work. That is the heart of it,” said Catherine Ross Cook, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) coordinator for District 233.

After 12 years in the classroom at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, Cook stepped into the newly created position at the start of the school year. The winner of the Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence will continue to teach one English class.

Teachers, administrators and staff at Homewood-Flossmoor High School have been discussing that and other scenarios in training sessions led by a team from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) as part of District 233’s approach to cultural competency training, an outgrowth of its 2019-2024 strategic planning process.

Flossmoor’s commitment to diversity rings loud and clear in a recently-released promotional video highlighting the community’s many faces and positive attributes.
The three-minute video features clips from events in town, such as National Night Out and Martin Luther King Day of Service, and interviews with Flossmoor residents who talk about their love for the town, its people and its “intentional inclusivity.”

International organization names Flossmoor recipient of diversity award

The Village of Flossmoor's commitment to diversity and inclusion has been recognized on an international level. Flossmoor is receiving the 2018 Community Diversity and Inclusion Program Excellence Award from the International City and County Managers Association (ICMA). This year’s award is being given to just three municipalities out of the organization’s 11,000 worldwide members.
