Report shows D161 ahead on mid-year revenue collection, but careful planning still needed for facilities upgrades

Flossmoor School District 161 is ahead of the game when it comes to revenues and expenditures at the halfway point of fiscal year 2021, but how to address facilities needs going forward will be a focus for administrators.

Finance Director Frances LaBella provided a Mid-Year Financial Report Monday, Feb. 22, during District 161’s Board of Education meeting. She also addressed the district’s long-range facility plan.

Construction dominated discussions at the Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education meeting held Monday, Feb. 8, with an eye toward the summer leading the way.

Associate Superintendent Fran LaBella called the work District 161 is aiming to do in summer 2021 “very minor compared to what we’ve been doing in previous years.”

Some D161 students return for hybrid in-person learning March 9, with fourth-quarter shift

A long-discussed return to in-person learning through a hybrid model in Flossmoor School District 161 is slated for March 9, but only for families who elected it.

The District 161 Board of Education voted 6-1 during a special meeting on Feb. 1 to approve the plan. To align the academic calendar with the hybrid return, board members also shifted the end date of the district’s third quarter and beginning of its fourth quarter, a move that means students may see a change in teachers.

District 161’s ‘remote from school’ students return; teachers start getting vaccinations

Prior to discussions about reopening Flossmoor School District 161 for in-person learning through a hybrid program, schools in the system already let some students back inside their walls.

Superintendent Dana Smith reported to the board Monday, Jan. 25, that “remote from school” learning had resumed for a group of 35 students.

“It went very well,” he said. “We’re hoping to increase those numbers in our remote from school program.”

Flossmoor School District 161 is once again planning to have a limited number of students back inside of its walls on Jan. 25, and that was enough to save the jobs of seven district employees who were to lose their positions in a reduction-of-force that had been slated for the middle of the month.

D161 reduces educational support staff by seven employees as remote learning continues

The Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education followed through on a plan to reduce the educational support staff by seven positions as its schools have remained closed to large-scale in-person learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The school board voted 6-0 on Monday, Dec. 14, to honorably dismiss two in-house bus drivers and five custodians 30 days following the action. Officials have said they have struggled to find work for those positions when students are not in session.
