Candidates discuss what’s great in District 161, how to move forward

Seven of nine candidates running for the Flossmoor School District 161 board of education Thursday responded to questions at a well-attended political forum.

In all, the candidates answered nine questions submitted by audience members in the Parker Junior High School gymnasium. The 90-minute forum was sponsored by the Homewood-Flossmoor League of Women Voters.

Nine candidates are running for four seats on the Flossmoor School District 161 board of education. They are Misha Lynn Blackman, LaCael Palmer Pratt, Melissa Stilts, Stephen Paredes, Carolyn Griggs, Isaac D. Harris, Jadey Ryndak, Kelli Bentley and Cameron Nelson. Paredes is an incumbent. Three other incumbents — Timijanel Boyd Odom, Lisa Harrell and Christine Marks — are not running for re-election. The following candidates responded to the Chronicle's invitation to provide a profile.

District 161 begins interviews with superintendent finalists

Six finalists for the position of superintendent are being interviewed by members of the Flossmoor District 161 Board of Education as the process to fill the spot by the end of February remains on track.

As for the final applicants, Board of Education President Stephen Paredes said, “They’re all superstars, the person we choose will be the best.”

Pay hikes approved in District 161

Pay increases for all employees are now in place after actions were taken by the Flossmoor District 161 Board of Education at a special meeting Jan. 23.

Approved were raises for non-bargaining employees and new rates of pay for substitute teachers and lunch aides. These increases follow a new four-year agreement reached with teachers on Dec. 12.

District 161 hires firm to help with Parker principal search

Flossmoor District 161 has formally engaged BWP & Associates to conduct the search for a new principal at Parker Junior High School but a cap has been placed on the expense.
The Board of Education Monday unanimously approved spending $9,500 for BWP to help land a new principal but tabled the spending of an additional $800 to $1,200 for “other expenses.”

Various activities this week provided the means for district residents, community leaders and employees to express their thoughts about the characteristics most needed as a new superintendent is hired.

District 161 considering search firm to help find Parker principal

The search for a new principal at Parker Junior High School will soon be underway and it’s possible Flossmoor District 161 will turn to a familiar search firm for assistance.

Interim Superintendent Michael Popp said a traditional internal search or using an outside source are the two options. His remarks were made at Tuesday’s board of education meeting.

District 161 residents can participate in superintendent search this month

More than 25 applicants are seeking the position of superintendent in Flossmoor School District 161 with three weeks remaining for more to apply, according to an official of the firm conducting the search.

Mark Friedman, president of BWP and Associates, is pleased with both the quantity and quality of the candidates generated by his firm’s advertising of the position. His firm has also recruited other candidates to apply for the post.
