Finance, performance questions shaping District 161 levy talks

Upcoming decisions about the Flossmoor School District 161 tax levy may come down to how three “guiding questions” are answered before a levy is enacted on Dec. 26.

The Board of Education’s discussion continued at its Oct. 10 meeting. The dialogue is not just about deciding a new tax levy. The ongoing conversation also includes what is fair for homeowners, whether budget cuts should be considered and determining how to hold the new administration accountable for improved results.

Fine-tuning bus service in District 161 reduces complaints this year

A representative of the school bus company serving Flossmoor School District 161 was on hand at Monday’s Board of Education meeting to respond to parents’ complaints even though school district and bus company officials acknowledged that things are running smoothly as the school year entered its third week. 
 

Bus route changes spark criticism to District 161 board

As the school year opened in Flossmoor School District 161, parents came forward with complaints about bus service.
 
At Monday’s committee of the whole meeting, school board members heard from three parents who were critical of bus service during the first week of school.
 
Most of the attention was on Bus 36 serving Western Avenue School. The criticisms were about numerous route changes, with one parent saying, “these issues are not new.” 
 

District 161 watching, waiting for end to state school funding crisis

Like school systems across the state, Flossmoor District 161 is in watch and wait mode as the Illinois General Assembly and Gov. Bruce Rauner wrangle over education funding legislation.

“We’re good, but…” stated Frances LaBella, assistant superintendent of business operations, during Monday’s school board meeting.

While there’s no question that school will start on time, LaBella explained that the district has a large stake in the outcome of the school funding debate.

Flossmoor hosts back to school event Aug. 18

As another academic year begins, the village of Flossmoor is partnering with local school districts to welcome students back to the classroom.

The village is hosting a Back to School Meet and Greet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at Flossmoor Park, 2523 Flossmoor Road. Officials from Flossmoor District 161 and Homewood-Flossmoor High School will be on hand to meet students and their parents prior to that night’s Movies in Our Parks presentation.
