Nat'l teen magazine publishes two works by H-F students

Two Homewood-Flossmoor High School students are now published authors, with their works having been published in the October 2018 issue of Teen Ink magazine. 

The poem “Let This Love Be a Lesson” by Jada Seaton was done for a class assignment, and the essay “I Have Two Names” by Oyindasola Chelsea Ayorinde, a senior, is her essay for college admissions that she started as a sophomore in a creative writing class.

You Matter 2 founder Destiny Watson’s outreach impacts peers, community

Nearly five years after founding You Matter 2, a service organization at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, Destiny Watson is still passionate about helping to improve the lives of others. Watson, now a junior at the University of Dayton, recently traveled to the Central American nation of El Salvador as part of her human rights studies. The experience, she said, was “eye-opening.” 

 

H-F Superintendent Mansfield chooses education for career of a lifetime

Homewood-Flossmoor High School Superintendent Von Mansfield knows his five years in the National Football League stand out on his résumé, but it’s his 30 years in education that have been the career he’s cherished. He grew up with four brothers and a single mom in a housing project in Milwaukee and rode the bus to the Milwaukee University School, a private school far removed from his neighborhood. 

Pancake breakfast fundraiser Feb. 16 at H-F High

Members of the Homewood-Flossmoor High School Viking Orchestra are hosting a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 16, in the South Building cafeteria.
 

Students from the Chamber, Sinfonia and Viking Orchestras will entertain during the breakfast.
 

The menu includes pancakes, sausage, juice, milk and coffee.  Tickets are $7. Children under 5 are free.
 

H-F High wins national award for inclusion efforts

Homewood-Flossmoor High School has a new banner to proudly display: National Banner Unified Champion School. 
 
H-F has strived to have students from all levels work together through partnerships in sports and classroom activities. The efforts put H-F in a unique status as one of only two high schools in Illinois recognized by Special Olympics for this honor.

H-F grad heading up prosecution in Manafort’s bank fraud, tax evasion trial

A Homewood-Flossmoor High School graduate is leading the prosecution against Paul Manafort, a former high-ranking member of President Trump’s 2016 election campaign. Manafort’s federal court trial for bank fraud and tax evasion started this week.

Uzo Asonye, an assistant United States attorney, is a 1998 H-F graduate, said Ann Cherry, the high school’s director of development and alumni relations.

Students visit with more than 200 colleges at H-F High’s annual event

Some students brought lists of schools they wanted to visit with. Others wandered the Homewood-Flossmoor High School field house listening to presentations from college representatives. Parents tagged along. It was a crowded house Oct. 16 when Big 10, Ivy League, Illinois schools and a host of others came to Flossmoor for the annual College Night.

MWRD’s massive stones, flood project mean dry homes near H-F

This summer, drivers along Governors Highway have seen stacks of stone at the staging area for the $4.1 million Cherry Creek flood control project, which the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) expects to complete this fall. The stones are being used to rebuild Cherry Creek as it meanders north from Homewood-Flossmoor High School.
