Registration open for kids summer camps at Homewood Science Center

Four summer science camp programs for elementary, middle and junior high students are being organized by the Homewood Science Center.
 
Science Minors Club is designed for students in second through fifth grades. The week-long program from 9 to 11:30 a.m. June 11 through 15, offers early, hands-on exposure to science activities that builds curiosity and encourages teamwork. Topics cover science and engineering.
 

Deadline Feb. 12 for 2nd Girls STEAM Ahead program

The Homewood Science Center is accepting applications from girls in seventh through 12th grades for its second Girls STEAM Ahead program on Feb. 24.
 
This free event will bring girls interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) the opportunity to meet with professional women and to show off their own inventions and creations. The registration deadline is Feb. 12. The online application is available at homewoodsciencecenter.org.

Fire department science program for teens is Sept. 23

Putting out a fire takes more than manpower.  There’s lots of science involved, as Homewood Fire Chief Bob Grabowski will explain at the Pop-Up Science Program  “The Science, Math and Physics of Fire Engineering” on Sept. 23.
 
This program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., hosted by the Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, is geared toward teens ages 12 to 16. It will be part classroom lecture and part demonstration.

Networking is the key to the success of the Homewood Science Center. Executive Director Edie Dobrez is enthusiastic about the connections the center has enabled groups, individuals and businesses to make — all in the name of sharing with others the excitement of the South Suburban Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Network.
