Surround sound tribute: Homewood Science Center marks the opening of the Michael Wexler Theater

Homewood Science Center patrons got a sampling June 6 of the state-of-the-art sound and video equipment that is the engine behind the Michael Wexler Theater, but family members giving tribute to the late actor and artist made a case that his creativity and sense of fun would be at the heart of the facility.

Passion for big machines trumps bad weather

The weather apparently didn't get the memo that Homewood had a big day of events planned for Saturday, May 20. 

Chilly temperatures and intermittent spurts of rain greeted people who came from Homewood and surrounding communities to enjoy a day of big machines ― Homewood Rail Fest, a PopUp Science session on railroads and rollercoasters and the Homewood Public Works Department's annual open house.

Wexler family and donors sponsor science center theater to honor Michael Wexler

The Wexler family has found a way to honor the late Michael Wexler's memory in what they believe will be a lasting and appropriate way. They are sponsoring the creation of a theater in the Homewood Science Center.

Wexler was a popular artist and actor who grew up in Homewood and was known by family, friends and colleagues as a generous and creative person. He was killed in a traffic accident in December 2015.

Kids learn about construction while having fun with cardboard

It's a truism among parents that whenever you give a kid a fancy new toy that was at the top of their Christmas list, the first thing they do is play with the box it came in.

Taking that phenomenon further, the Homewood Science Center provided a big pile of cardboard, kid-safe tools and a couple of project ideas Friday night, Jan. 6, and not even bitterly cold temperatures could keep kids away.

Walk Walton fundraiser: Homewood Science Center to host fall festival at Izaak Walton Preserve

Fresh air, fun science and a chance to help the Homewood Science Center continue to grow. That's what Walk Walton, a PopUp Science fundraiser, has to offer area residents from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. Walk Walton will be the HSC's first fall festival. The event will be an opportunity to escape into the beauty of autumn on a guided nature walk or stroll the trails on your own with a self-guided tour through Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road in Homewood.
