Prairie State College helping to make a difference through One Million Degrees program

This school year, Prairie State College (PSC) has enveloped a select group of students with a hand-in-hand program to get them ready for the world of work. Through the One Million Degrees (OMD) initiative, Marcus Singleton, a full-time counselor on the PSC campus, is giving the guidance and support these low-income students need to succeed at community college and beyond.

Students named to Prairie State’s honor roll

Prairie State College (PSC) has named outstanding Homewood and Flossmoor students to its fall semester Dean’s List.

Students had a semester grade point average (GPA) of 3.75 or better; completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at PSC during the fall semester; and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.

Honorees are:

Flossmoor: Peter R. Brassea, Henry U. Ezekiel, Tinsha Thomas, Tyler P. Wians.

Artists’ ‘Memory’ exhibit opens in Prairie State’s art gallery on Feb. 8

 “Memory: An exhibition of portraiture evoking memory,” is the newest show in the Christopher Art Gallery at Prairie State College (PSC), 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights.         

Artists Ellen Holtzblatt, Judith Roth, John P. Smolko, Joseph Taylor and Julian Williams will be welcomed at a 4:30 to 7 p.m. reception on Feb 11. The exhibit continues through March 9.

Prairie State College meeting financial challenges on ‘tight’ budget

Terri Winfree, president of Prairie State College (PSC), acknowledges the school’s estimated $59.4 million overall budget is “very tight” but she believes the community college serving Homewood and Flossmoor will weather the financial constraints PSC is facing because of the state’s budget crisis.

Reception for military veteran artists set for Nov. 12 at Prairie State College

Prairie State College is hosting “Action/Reaction,” an art exhibit running through Dec. 3 of works by a collective of artists with military service. The show is in the Christopher Art Gallery on the main campus, 202 S. Halsted St., Chicago Heights. A reception for the artists is scheduled from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12. 

Seat opens on Prairie State College Board

Voters in Homewood and Flossmoor interested in higher education may apply by Aug. 3 for an open seat on the Prairie State College (PSC) Board of Trustees. The new trustee will serve until the April 2017 election.

Trustee Peg Donohue resigned from the board after serving for eight years. 

Donohue worked for many years at Governors State University. She also has been involved in numerous south suburban organizations.
