District 161’s ‘remote from school’ students return; teachers start getting vaccinations

Prior to discussions about reopening Flossmoor School District 161 for in-person learning through a hybrid program, schools in the system already let some students back inside their walls.

Superintendent Dana Smith reported to the board Monday, Jan. 25, that “remote from school” learning had resumed for a group of 35 students.

“It went very well,” he said. “We’re hoping to increase those numbers in our remote from school program.”

State moves suburban region into Tier 1, allowing H-F restaurants and bars limited indoor service

Restaurants and bars in Homewood and Flossmoor can begin indoor service if they choose after state health officials announced Saturday that Region 10 moved from Tier 2 to Tier 1 COVID-19 mitigation restrictions.

Limitations remain, however. Establishments are required to observe occupancy limits of 25% capacity or 25 people per room, whichever is less.

Homewood schools target Feb. 16 for opening hybrid classes

The District 153 school board will conduct a special meeting on Monday, Feb. 1, to determine if schools can open Feb. 16 for hybrid learning.

The district has set out “checkpoints” for every two weeks. It missed the Jan. 7 target, so classes continued remotely. In a Tuesday, Jan. 19, checkpoint assessment, the numbers had administrators agree to continue the remote schedule.

Flossmoor village hall to reopen Thursday

Flossmoor officials announced Wednesday afternoon that village hall and public works offices will reopen to the public on Thursday, Jan. 21. 

Flossmoor public facilities have been closed because of state-imposed virus mitigation restrictions. The suburban Chicago region has been in Tier 3 mitigations since November. 

State health officials announced on Monday that the region would move to the less restrictive Tier 2 level. 

Flossmoor Station, Bistro on Sterling, re-open for outdoor dining Friday

After more than two months of serving nothing but takeout food and beverages, Flossmoor’s three downtown restaurants are poised to reopen for outdoor dining.

Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery and the Bistro on Sterling will reopen for in-person dining on Friday. Dunning’s Gourmet Market & Deli is closed for vacation this week and will start offering outdoor dining on June 2.
