H-F girls tennis wins sectional championship, ready for state

The Homewood-Flossmoor High School girls tennis team won the Lincoln-Way Central Sectional Championship and will send four students to compete in the state championship tournament this weekend in Arlington Heights.
 
H-F was one of nine teams in competition at the Lincoln Way Central Sectional Championship on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13. H-F had a total of 30 points from all rounds. It’s nearest competitor, Lincoln-Way Central, had 24 points.

Rising above challenges, local tennis player heads to national games

Matt Boerema of Homewood, a tennis player for 25 years, has succeeded at a challenging sport while using just one of his hands. This week, Boerema is traveling to Seattle, where he is competing in the Special Olympics national games, taking place July 1 through July 6. He also competes each year in the Illinois Special Olympics tennis tournament.

Vikings drafted by MLB choose college

Two outstanding members of the Vikings baseball team at Homewood-Flossmoor High School were offered contracts in the Major League Baseball draft in June.

But left-handed pitcher Kyle Salley and outfielder Zaid Walker passed on the offers and instead will play ball in college. Both can be drafted by MLB after their third year of college.
