Forget Zorro. He wasn’t a fencer. The masked man’s swashbuckling movie scenes that capture the clatter from dueling rapiers as opponents fight on isn’t what today’s fencing is about. Today’s fencing requires one-on-one strategy, physical agility and intensity and it’s drawing the attention of students at Homewood-Flossmoor and Marian Catholic High Schools. Nationwide, interest in high school fencing has been on a steady rise the past four decades, according to the National Fencing Club.

Weather helped Coyote Run Golf Course record its longest season in 2017

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District’s Coyote Run Golf Course in Flossmoor had its longest season on record — 310 days. 

Dave Ward, superintendent of golf, reported to the park board that the unseasonably mild winter allowed the park district to open the course Feb. 17, 2017, the earliest opening day in its history. The season, that officially closed Dec. 24, was the longest golf season at the course.

HF Soccer Club to host competitive tryouts on Sunday

HF Soccer Club will host competitve tryouts from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7, at Homewood-Flossmoor High School Field House, 800 Governors Highway in Flossmoor.

Registration will begin at 5 p.m. with tryouts starting at 5:30 p.m.

Tryouts will offer players a chance to be placed in competitive teams for the spring 2018 season. Players who were on competitive HF Soccer Club teams during the fall 2017 season do not need to try out.

Resident raises red flag on H-F High sports travel costs

District 233 School board members approved five out-of-town trips for Homewood-Flossmoor High School sports teams, and tried to answer concerns from Flossmoor resident Peter Hallam who said the move was not transparent.
 
It was the second time Hallam addressed the board to argue about its vote to pay for the trips. At the October board meeting, he complained board members needed to investigate why certain teams were given a preference.
 

Registration nears for FBBSB hitting league, 2018 programs

Flossmoor Baseball and Softball (FBBSB) is introducing a baseball hitting league this fall. The program, which is being offered for the first time, will take place from Nov. 4 to Dec. 14 in the Homewood-Flossmoor High School Field House.
 
The weekly program will focus on situational hitting. Each two-hour session format will include 40 minutes of hitting and instruction, 40 minutes of competition and 40 minutes of performance training.
