Send kids ‘Chalk the Walk’ messages for back to school

Residents in Homewood and Flossmoor are encouraged to “Chalk the Walk” by writing encouraging messages on the walks around our towns as District 153 and 161 students start back to school.

“Chalk the Walk” was hosted by Flossmoor schools last school year.  This year both school districts are hoping to coax parents, residents and businesses to write inspiring messages for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Homewood schools return on Wednesday, Aug. 22.  Messages can go out on Tuesday, Aug. 21.  Residents can get chalk from Foundation 153 volunteers at the Homewood Block Party in downtown Homewood on Saturday, Aug. 18, between noon and 9 p.m.

Also at the Block Party, residents can register for the Foundation 153 Fund Run set for Aug. 25. Donations will help with meeting student technology needs. This year, Fund Run is a three-part program that opens with the run at 9 a.m. followed by a Family Bash party at the H-F Sports Complex, 18211 Aberdeen Ave. An evening event for adults will be held at Grape & Grain from 7 to 10 p.m.

Flossmoor District 161 students return to school on Thursday, Aug. 23. Messages can go out after 5 p.m. on Aug. 22.

Flossmoor trustees will be handing out chalk to those attending the Friday, Aug. 17, presentation of the movie “A Wrinkle in Time” at Flossmoor Park, 2523 Flossmoor Road. The movie will be showing at 7:30 p.m., but “back to school” events start at 6 p.m.
