Murder charge filed in H-F student’s death

Homewood police announced Tuesday that a 19-year-old Chicago Heights man has been charged with first degree murder in connection with the shooting death Saturday, Sept. 1, of Romane D. Taylor Jr.

Johnny Johnson, of the 100 block of Sue Street, was slated to appear in bond court Tuesday. He did not shoot Taylor, according to the police description of the incident, but was involved in an attempted armed robbery during which Taylor was killed.

Police said Johnson and a partner, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Taylor, 17, also of Chicago Heights, lured an acquaintance to the 19100 block of Loomis Avenue in Homewood early Saturday afternoon with the intent of robbing the acquaintance.

All three were armed, police said. Taylor fired his weapon at the acquaintance, who returned fire, striking Taylor in the abdomen. Taylor, a senior at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m. Saturday.
