Local COVID-19 cases jump, state numbers decrease for the first time this summer

Statewide, there was some good news last week as the number of new COVID-19 cases was less than the previous week for the first time since mid-June. Locally, parents remain concerned about infections among school children. Most elementary school students do not qualify to receive vaccines.

H-F High's DEI coordinator Catherine Ross Cook says all input is welcome

“The heart of equity work is that we’re all at the table together doing this work. That is the heart of it,” said Catherine Ross Cook, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) coordinator for District 233.

After 12 years in the classroom at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, Cook stepped into the newly created position at the start of the school year. The winner of the Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence will continue to teach one English class.

Food drive Sept. 18 at St. Joe’s

St. Joseph Church is hosting a food donation drive on Saturday, Sept. 18, for the “Neighbors in Need” program sponsored by Catholic Charities.

Donations of food will be accepted from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the church’s north parking lot at 17951 Dixie Highway in Homewood. This will be a “pop-the-trunk” drive that will not require any direct contact between volunteers and donors.
