Homewood-East Hazel Crest site still in running for south suburban casino

It's down to two.

Wind Creek Illinois, which hopes to build a casino on property in Homewood and East Hazel Crest, made the cut on Wednesday as the Illinois Gaming Board continued the process of selecting a site for a south suburban casino.

Also still in the running is a proposed casino in Matteson that would be operated by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

Proposals for sites in Calumet City and Lynwood were eliminated by the board.

Shots fired Monday in Homewood

Homewood police responded to reports of shots fired just before midnight Monday, Oct. 18.

Officers found shell casings in the 18300 block of Hood Avenue, but no one was injured and no property damage was found from the incident.

Police urge anyone who may have information about this incident to contact the Homewood Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit at 708-206-3420.

Anderson commits to Indiana college as H-F volleyball postseason approaches

It was the ice cream that won Bianca Anderson over.

When the Homewood-Flossmoor senior volleyball player took a visit to the University of Southern Indiana, some of the Screaming Eagles took her out for a cold treat.

“I was already getting to know them,” she said. “It was just how they brought me in and accepted me without even knowing if I was going to commit there.”

Kedzie Gateway TIF approved by Homewood board

The Kedzie Gateway TIF is now an official TIF district after approval from the Homewood Board of Trustees at its Oct. 12 meeting.

The district, primarily located primarily on 183rd Street between Kimball Avenue and Robin Lane, will use one of the village’s financial tools to “alleviate conditions that deter private investment in the area,” according to a village document.

Pedestrian dies Tuesday in traffic accident on Governors Highway

A 74-year-old pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and killed early Tuesday, Oct. 19, according to Homewood police.

The accident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. in the area of Governors Highway and Dolphin Lake Drive.

Officers said the victim was struck by a gray KIA Forte, which had been traveling southbound on Governors Highway. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of family members, police said.
